A pat on the back!

Zug 2 / Red Pride started strongly vs Bern 2, scoring an early try and in a strong position to score again. However a couple of debatable decisions by the ref seemed to upset the team’s rhythm. From thereon the Entente team highlighted the lack of training or playing together, and put on a disjointed display until the final stages. Captain for the day Enrico tried to rally the troops with a surging run for an excellent score, yet again FL plates speeding on the Swiss autobahn….but it was too little, too late and Bern ran out deserved winners. Plenty to work on for the Entente, but add a little cohesion to the spirit and better days lie ahead.
Zug 1 put on a dominant display of running rugby against Basel FT, dispatching the guests 63-3. Had it been a scrum contest only, it would have been a different story as Zug struggled to cope with the Basel set-pieces. Even line-outs proved difficult early in the game but thrower and jumpers adapted and the traditional strength in this area returned. So, the forwards have some work to do when training resumes in Feb! On the plus side, the Zug forward pack was far too hot to handle in the loose, even if some of the rucking was not quite as aggressive as it should have been. Basel simply could not deal with the hard running and skillful play of a confident Zug XV. The defensive effort from 1 to 22 was also outstanding. This has been a hallmark of Zug rugby in recent seasons and it means we are competitive in every game. Almost as pleasing were the two team tries touched down in the corner by the wingers – truly champagne rugby.
Tougher tests lie ahead, but with about 30 players competing for first team slots, Zug Rugby is well-placed to prosper against the other top teams in C division.
The comprehensive win against Basel puts Zug top of C West, with most points for, least points against and 6 wins out of 7. Onwards and upwards!
