In August this year, a number of the Zug Touch players were lucky enough to be selected for the Over 35’s squad at the European Touch Championships in Wales. We trained for 4 months prior to the tournament, and there was a great improvement in terms of the basics pieces/skills involved in playing touch.

Many of the squad are ex-rugby players and coaches who have only recently tasted the joys of Touch!! For us, it has been a pleasure to be able to get back into a team sport. With a basic understanding of how to pass and catch the ball, over the past year and half we have learnt many of the basic touch rugby skills and particularly the value of a good pass and running off the ball  to DSC_0647create space. Going to play competitive rugby at the Euros was a real honour and an experience we will never forget. Whilst our raw results were not that impressive, we did make progress and narrowly missed drawing with Scotland. We are certainly hungry for more and keen to make further improvements in our game with a view to developing a larger 40s squad that is capable of competing for medals in future European Championships.

Ireland & Switzerland

Although defensively we did ok at the Tournament, we struggled when it came to our attacking options, and this is something that we have to work on before the next tournament.  We tended to rely on the creativity of one player to produce try scoring opportunities. To start winning we need two or three players with the vision and creativity to create try scoring opportunities when the team is 10 m from the opposing line.  I think we have the raw talent (although there is always room for more) and with practice and crucially, game Zug tournament, Sept 2014time – I think we will get there!  We certainly recognised that our fitness levels in terms of stop / start / sprinting would  need to improve to be able to compete properly at the higher levels. We now need to develop a squad of 25 people capable of competing for places in the Euros in 2 years time.
