RU Zürich : Zug 17:17

Zug put up a better performance in Brunau against RU Zürich, with the first 30 minutes very encouraging. Well structured and aggressive in attack, fast and coordinated in defence, Zug threatened to blow RUZ away to start with. Two early tries were no more reward than the pressure deserved.

One thing about RUZ is however that they don’t give up easily – as a team they play loose, but are willing to take risks and attack from anywhere. Though their first try came via a fortunate bounce, they kept within touch throughout the game. By the end of the match, which finished 17:17, it was difficult to deny that RUZ deserved a share of the spoils.

Zug has plenty to work on under the new coaching team of Dave McKimm and Paul Timmins. However the way the first team played from the kick-off augurs well, and gives the coaches a good platform to build on. Solid structure, with the confidence to attack gaps and take people on, combines well with a defence that is up quick and makes tackles.
It was also heartening to see a decent turnout of new players and U18s star for the 2s in a hard-fought victory in a friendly game. The U18s playing for the 2s have plenty technical ability, but it is a step up in physicality – so far they are adapting very well! We must aim to consistently field 2 teams each week to give all these guys the opportunity to play rugby.
Thank you to RU Zürich for being generous hosts and tenacious opponents, as always!
